Lucky Dog
It’s when you have that first swig of your favorite pop that day that makes you grab the sides of the table and cringe your neck in complete and utterly painful satisfaction. It’s when you see a young infant chasing after an evasive toy and falling backwards, only to let out an innocent giggle and get back up. . .
It’s the feeling of an almost intolerably hot shower when your thermostat reads 62 degrees and it’s snowing outside. It’s the sensation of putting on socks and a long-sleeve shirt right out of the dryer. It’s the unexpected verbal exchange with the 75 year old at the tollbooth who smiles and says, “Have a great day.” Which sadly, often goes unreturned because we’re in a hurry and a $1.75 poorer. . .
It’s the sight of watching the driver in front of you at the stop light hand off a sandwich to a homeless person or throws money into the outstretched boot of a fireman. It’s a hug from a dear friend and you know she’s the second one to let go. It’s the way your heart melts when you walk into your bedroom to find your cat sound asleep with his head turned slightly upside down, covered by his paw and completely undisturbed by your entrance. . .
It’s getting a one-sentence e-mail from an old friend that says she’s thinking about you. . .
It’s the sense of purpose and importance you get when you’re accelerating down the runway, on your way to a new city for a meeting. It’s the unexplainable feeling of gratitude and good fortune you feel when the customs/immigration officer stamps your passport, wishing your friends and family were as lucky as you. It’s the sense of humility and unity with something unexplainable and seemingly unreal, when a frail and comparatively poor Chinese farmer watches you casually walk by his table of vegetables, smiles and in broken English says, “Enjoy your journey. . .”
It’s the sense of pride you feel when you get a card in the mail for no particular reason that says, “Love, Mom and Dad.” It’s waking up next to that special someone before they do and realizing that there’s no place you’d rather be than right there watching them breathe. And dream. . .
It’s the momentary awareness of these little things that make you feel invincible.
And just for an instant, you truly believe you are.
